(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 7 - Istat said Thursday that the number of
Italian centenarians has increased by more than 30% over the
last 10 years.
The national statistics agency said that 22,552 people resident
in Italy were aged 100 or over on January 1, 2024, compared to
17,252 in 2014.
It said that 81% of the centenarians were women.
Istat said Italy had 677 residents aged 105 years or more at the
start of this year and 21 'super-centenarians' who had reached
the 110-year threshold, including only one man.
The agency said Italy's oldest person was a woman living in
Emilia-Romagna, who turned 114 in October.
It said the oldest man was a Basilicata resident who turned 110
last month. (ANSA).
