(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 8 - A third-category Sardinian soccer team
boycotted its match against a Sassari team Saturday in protest
at the lack of penalties for monkey chants against a
Gambian-born player in a match the previous weekend.
The team, Gymnasium, refused to play after their player Ba was
racially abused by the chants at Mamoiada last Sunday and the
football league issued a suspended sentence after awarding the
game to Gymnasium.
"We were shocked. You think it could never happen to you, and
yet it happened." club chairman Fabrizio Usai told ANSA. (ANSA).
