(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 8 - Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said
Sunday the transition of power from Bashar al-Assad to
pro-Turkish Islamist rebels and others in Syria should be
political and not military.
In Syria, he said, "we hope for a peaceful handover between the
regime that fell and the new reality. That there be a political
and not military transition. It seems to me that at the moment
things are going in this direction. It is important that the
political unity of Syria remains".
On the situation "the constant discussion with our G7 allies
continues and it is not excluded that there could be an EU
document, a document of 27, in the next few hours", he added.
Tajani reiterated an appeal for the safety and security of the
Christian minority in the Middle Eastern country saying there
were positive signs on minority conditions and that some bishops
were talking to the insurgents.
"I spoke at length with the apostolic nuncio in Damascus. Some
bishops are also speaking with the insurgents. But the messages
that the nuncio gave me are quite positive". (ANSA).
