Probe into allegedly bent top cop shelved
Nicola Izzo off the hook for contract-rigging
03 April, 15:54The probe against former top cop Nicola Izzo, prefect Giovanna Iurato and others was set off by an anonymous tip in October 2012. The informant alleged that a 37-million-euro interior ministry tender offer for the construction and logistical setup of a police Data Processing Center (CEN) in Naples was steered illegally towards Elsag Datamat S.p.A., a subsidiary of Finmeccanica defense and aerospace giant.
The contract was awarded to Elsag Datamat in spite of the tender commission's opinion to the contrary, judicial sources said.
The informant also alleged that Deputy Police Commissioner Salvatore Saporito was driven to commit suicide in his Rome barracks on March 31, 2011, by crooked colleagues while working at the interior ministry's logistics office, where he allegedly tried to resist pressure to go along with the tender-rigging.
Izzo, who denied all wrongdoing, resigned in November 2012.
