Premier Giorgia Meloni has said no one
can celebrate after last weekend's second round of voting in
French parliamentary elections.
Marine Le Pen's right-wing National Rally (RN) was beaten back
to third place with the help of tactical voting after coming
first in the first round, with the left-wing New Popular Front
getting the most seats and President Emmanuel Macron's centrist
Together alliance coming second.
"I think the reading I have seen from some quarters that RN lost
is a bit simplistic because, if we want to look at what happened
in France, the truth is that no one can celebrate victory,"
Meloni said in Washington overnight after arriving in the US
capital for the NATO summit.
"There were three groups: none of the three has established
itself (as the winner), none of the three is able to govern
alone.
"We will see what will happen. The result of the second round is
that no one won the election".
