Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Friday morning started talks with Syria's interim president, Ahmed As Sharaa, also known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, Italian foreign ministry sources said.
    Tajani on Thursday said he would meet the Syrian leader during his visit to Damascus where his goal would be to try to work towards achieving Syrian stability after the Quint meeting in Rome Thursday evening.
    He announced that he would also be meeting with the foreign minister, civil society, Christians, underlining that he will also visit the Damascus Mosque.
    "The objective is to have a stable Syria, territorial unity and for everyone to be recognized as citizens with equal rights and duties", said the minister, according to whom "the first messages from Damascus are positive, that is why I will be there to encourage a new phase that serves to stabilize the internal situation".
    On Thursday, Premier Giorgia Meloni spoke on the phone with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, her office at Palazzo Chigi said in a note.
    "At the centre of talks, the situation in the Middle East and in particular Syria, one month after the fall of Assad's regime", Palazzo Chigi said late Thursday, explaining that "the two Leaders have reiterated the wish for the ongoing transition to be peaceful and inclusive, to fully ensure the integration of all components of Syrian society and to be able to contribute to regional stability and security".
