Suicides, assaults and protests in
Italian prisons are on the rise, according to the latest data
from penitentiaries collated by ANSA Monday.
There have so far been 43 prison suicides in 2024 compared to 28
in the same period last year.
Also on the rise are attempted suicides (877 versus 821),
assaults on prison staff (881 versus 688), collective protest
demonstrations (599 versus 440), injuries (286 versus 264) and
fights (2,203 versus 2,055).
There are a total of 61,468 inmates, compared to 47,067
regularly available places, for an overcrowding index of
130.59%, said the figures.
