Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Wednesday said he will travel to Damascus Friday to meet with Syrian authorities during a question time session at the Lower House.
"On Friday, I will go to Damascus to meet with Syrian authorities", Tajani told the House.
During his visit to Damascus, Tajani said he will "reiterate to Syrian authorities the importance of an inclusive political process that guarantees the fundamental freedoms of all Syrians and recognizes and enhances the role of Christians as citizens with full rights".
"Relations with Syrian authorities will depend on the respect of commitments they have undertaken at the domestic and international level", added Tajani.
He stressed that "the Italian government is ready to play its part for a peaceful and inclusive transition".
The foreign minister began the session saying that he was "very happy to share the joy" for the release of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, noting that he was "proud" of the great team work of the government, diplomatic corps and intelligence services who "worked in the same direction" to bring her back home.
