The Italian Ambassador to Tunis, Alessandro Prunas, took part in the day dedicated to the first pilot bio-territory implemented in El Haouaria thanks to funding from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation in Tunis.
Support for organic farming, as the ambassador stressed, is a fundamental part of the partnership between Italy and Tunisia. The organic territory takes into account the way of life, food, human relations and natural resources in the area in order to promote local agricultural production that is appreciated by consumers and, consequently, of greater market value.
The event, which was also attended by the chief of staff of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ajimi, was held as part of the Sparrowhawk Festival, which has been held in El Haouaria in the summer for 50 years. This locality, thanks to its particular geographic location, is a favourite place of refuge and refreshment for a multitude of migratory bird species before they face the Mediterranean crossing, Tunisian falconers have been handing down techniques and knowledge based on ancient traditions for centuries.
In particular, the falconers of El Haouaria are the custodians of a language, gestures and values that have earned them inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Festival, dedicated to falconry, includes exhibitions, shows, parades on horseback, various folklore but also scientific insights into the study of birds of prey by the Association of Falconers of El Haouaria.
