The Ambassador of Italy to Chile, Valeria Biagiotti, will pay her first visit to Concepción, the capital of the Bío Bío region, from 6 to 8 August. The visit will be an opportunity to reaffirm the solid ties between Italy and Chile, nourished and enriched by the presence of an extremely active Italian community and by the work of the Italian schools in the country, thanks to which the teaching of our language and culture is kept alive. An important part of the mission will be the visits to the 'República de Italia' high school in Chillán, a city in the Ñuble region, in the presence of Mayor Camilo Benavente, to the 'República de Italia' school in the municipality of Penco, together with Mayor Víctor Hugo Figueroa, and to the Italian school in Concepción, which recently celebrated its 31st anniversary.
The teaching of Italian is included in the regular curriculum of these schools, which join the public school of Capitán Pastene, in the Araucanía region, as a reinforcement of the action plan of the Italian Embassy in Santiago for the inclusion of Italian as a curricular subject in Chilean state institutions.
Afterwards, the Ambassador will visit the Fourth Fire Company, the Umberto I of Talcahuano, founded on 7 July 1901 by a group of Italians to thank for Chile's generous hospitality and to contribute to the safety of the community of this city of about 200,000 inhabitants. A commitment that Umberto I di Talcahuano still carries on today, having recently celebrated 123 years of activity. The Ambassador will also pay a visit to the Governor of the Bío Bío Region, Rodrigo Díaz Wörner.
At the close of the three days, the Ambassador will attend the event 'Comites Concepcion 2024 Meeting', at the University of Concepcion, organised by the Committee for Italians Abroad of Chile for compatriots in the Bío Bío. The President of the Comites, Claudio Curelli, Professor Nello Gargiulo of the General Council of Italians Abroad (Cgie), the Honorary Consul of Concepcion, Colomba Boero, and the main patronages will be present. During the event, there will also be a presentation of the main services that the Consular Chancellery of the Italian Embassy in Santiago offers to compatriots in close connection with the network of Honorary Consuls in Chile.
The Italian community in Bío Bío is an important and well-integrated reality in the local economic and social fabric, with its 3163 Italian residents, 1741 of whom live in the municipality of Concepción.
