The Italian Ambassador to Tanzania, Giuseppe Coppola, met today in Stone Town, together with Honorary Vice Consul Totisco, the President of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, for an initial exchange of ideas on strengthening relations between Italy and the Tanzanian archipelago.
At the centre of the talks was the promotion of tourism in Zanzibar, where Italy ranks first in terms of investments and number of tourists. President Mwinyi praised the role played by Italy in Zanzibar's tourism industry since the early 1990s, 'ahead of all' other international partners, and called for further Italian investment in the sector, including in the training of local personnel.
The meeting also examined Italian cooperation activities in the archipelago, traditionally in the health sector, and the prospects for collaboration in the blue economy sector. Ambassador Coppola recalled the numerous interventions carried out over time also in the social sphere by the Italian community in Zanzibar, where the largest number of compatriots in Tanzania is concentrated, citing the Ivo de Carneri Foundation, on the island of Pemba, as a flagship of the Italian presence in the health sector.
