On Friday 13 December, the Italian Consulate in Cape Town organised the traditional Christmas Concert for the large Italian community in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.
Italian Consul Giulio Mignacca introduced the audience to opera singers who celebrated the start of the festivities in a packed Saint Mary's Cathedral, seat of the city's Catholic archdiocese.
Sopranos Zizhipo Funzo and Karabo Rabaloi, together with tenor Thandolwethu Longo and baritone Themba Mdlalose, all singers from the University of Cape Town (Uct) accompanied by Lisa Englebrecht on piano, performed a programme of classical, baroque and Bel Canto music that brought the Christmas spirit to the start of the festive season for the Cape Italians.
