Defense Minister Guido Crosetto
is arriving at Camp Adazi, 30 kilometers from Riga, Latvia, for
a salute to the Italian contingent engaged in NATO Operation
Baltic Guardian. The Baltic task group consists of nearly 300
military personnel - the commander is Lieutenant Colonel
Pasquale Lanni - embedded in the international battle group led
by Canada, consisting of 2,500 troops, joined by 1,500 Latvian
military personnel. With the deployment of 4 battle groups in
the Baltic region, the Atlantic Alliance has responded to the
request of countries in the area (in addition to Latvia,
Estonia, Lithuania and Poland) to strengthen the principle of
deterrence against possible threats from Russia. "The Italian
military," Lieutenant Colonel Lanni said, "have been here since
2017, and the size of the contingent has continuously increased.
We carry out training and interoperability activities."
