Kosovo commemorated Liberation
Day today, the 25th anniversary of the end of the armed
conflict, with the withdrawal of Slobodan Milosevic's Serbian
forces and the arrival of approximately 40,000 KFOR soldiers,
the NATO peacekeeping forces. The withdrawal of Belgrade's
troops came after NATO bombed Serbia for 78 days between March
and June 1999, killing and injuring thousands of people, both
military and civilian, and causing massive destruction. The
raids ended on June 10th, when the Kumanovo agreement was signed
and Resolution 1244 was adopted by the UN Security Council. At
the same time, NATO troops began to enter Kosovo.
