In the first five months of 2024,
irregular border crossings into the European Union decreased by
23% to nearly 80,000, according to preliminary Frontex data. The
Western Balkans and Central Mediterranean routes saw the largest
reductions, with detections dropping by 71% and 58%,
respectively. Conversely, the Western African and Eastern
Mediterranean routes experienced significant increases, with
irregular crossings up by 303% and 103%, respectively.
