Fires are raging in North Macedonia,
with numerous wildfires affecting forested areas across the
country. The fires are fueled by dry conditions, strong winds,
and temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius due to a heatwave
affecting the Balkan region.
Upon request for assistance from the authorities in Skopje,
firefighting equipment and rescue teams have been arriving to
aid in firefighting operations, particularly in the central and
southwestern parts of the country. Planes and helicopters from
Turkey, Serbia, and Croatia have been dispatched, and additional
firefighting aircraft are expected to arrive from Slovenia and
Montenegro in the coming hours. In response, the Macedonian
government declared a 30-day emergency last week. It's important
to note that fires have also been reported in Greece and
Bulgaria due to those countries' extreme heat and high
temperatures.
