Six thousand and two hundred and
eleven passengers have boarded the train connecting Trieste and
Rijeka, Croatia. The experimental line, activated on April 24,
leaves from Villa Opicina, passes through the stations of Divaca
and Pivka in Slovenia, and reaches the port city on Kvarner Bay.
A service review, with data reported at the end of August, was
presented today in Trieste during a roundtable discussion with
local stakeholders of the Sustance project. The European
Regional Development Fund co-finances the project through the
Interreg Central Europe program.
The international train service will run until September 30.
So far, 366 bicycles have also been transported.
Sustance, coordinated by the Executive Secretariat of the
Central European Initiative, aims to ensure efficient and
sustainable mobility for those living in rural or peripheral
areas of the vast area of Central Europe shared by Italy,
Slovenia, Croatia, and Hungary.
"The Trieste-Rijeka line is a project with a very high
cultural value. Indeed, it has reconnected territories that
historical events had driven apart. From this point of view,
this railway line represents a real revolution," said FVG
Regional Councillor for Infrastructure and Territory, Cristina
Amirante.
