The Radio and Television of
Slovakia (RTVS) is on the brink of permanent closure. In its
place, a new public institution that is more in line with the
current Slovak political climate and less critical will be
established: the Slovak Television and Radio (STVR). This is the
decision of the Parliament of the country, which is chaired by
Robert Fico. With the abolition of the RTVS, the director
general is forced to step down. Last night, 78 deputies voted in
favour of abolition. The opposition, which boycotted the vote in
protest, claimed the government was running the country
according to "an autocrats' manual."
