Federal Minister for Economic
Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze said in an interview
with Ukrinform that the German government expects about 1,500
participants at the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC) in Berlin
on June 11-12.
"We expect about 1,500 participants," said Schulze, who
called the conference "special" because the organizers have
invited representatives of civil society and local government
bodies in addition to government and business representatives.
Schulze stressed the importance of involving society and
local government in recovery efforts because the citizens,
cities, and municipal self-government bodies are already taking
matters into their own hands and know what is missing. The
minister also said that Ukrainian and German cities and
communities have already signed more than 200 partnerships.
Schulze then underlined that the URC does not aim to be a
"conference of promises" but should influence several dimensions
of reconstruction, from the economy to the psychosocial support
of Ukrainians.
