A group of young people in the town
of Busto Arsizio near Varese have attacked police officers in an
incident similar to the one reported on New Year's Eve in Milan,
investigative sources said on Saturday.
The police officers on Friday night intervened to stop two
youths who were throwing bottles at passing cars, hurling
insults and threatening passersby.
Once the police officers reached the scene, a group of 30 to 40
youths, most of them foreigners, grouped in front of the two
young men the officers were trying to identify, the sources
said.
They started insulting the police, the government and Italy and
did not allow the police officers to question the pair,
according to the same sources.
Several North African youths are being probed in Milan for
allegedly insulting Italy during New Year's Eve celebrations at
the Duomo, also waving their own national flags.
Prosecutors in the northern city are also investigating alleged
sexual assault cases during New Year's Eve celebrations in
Piazza Duomo.
