Italy's Ferrovie dello Stato (FS)
railway company said Sunday that it would continue operating its
direct Frecciarossa high-speed train service between Rome and
Pompeii on Sundays throughout 2024.
Premier Giorgia Meloni inaugurated the service on July 16 and
over 3,000 people have used it since then.
Before then it had been necessary for people wanting to get to
the world's most famous archaeological site from the capital via
train to change in Naples - an option that remains available.
The outward service goes from Rome's Termini station to Pompeii
in the morning and returns in the event. The only stop is in
Naples.
"The FS Group's decision (to continue the service) is based on
figures that show how successful this initiative, which we
believed in from the off, has been" said Culture Minister
Gennaro Sangiuliano.
"After an initial experimental phase, we made the connection
weekly.
"In the future we are thinking of extending the service further.
"Pompeii is unique in the history of the world.
"It is a place that represents the memory not just of our
identity, but of that of all humanity".
