European voters will go to the
polls today in 20 countries, including France, Germany, and
Italy, on the final day of the marathon for the European
elections, which began in Estonia on June 3. More than 400
million people are eligible to vote, making this election the
world's second largest democratic poll after India. In a year of
critical elections, the vote in the EU is especially important
in a continent marked by polarised politics and rising
nationalism, the BBC reports today. According to forecasts,
Europe's main centre-right grouping will prevail across the EU
when the first exit poll projections are released this evening.
Voting is scheduled in Austria is from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; in
Belgium and Luxembourg from 8:00 to 14:00 (and until 16:00 in
Belgium if you opt for electronic voting); in Bulgaria (where
citizens will vote for the parliamentary elections as well) from
7:00 to 20:00; in Croatia, Greece, and Slovenia from 7:00 to
19:00; in Cyprus from 7:00 to 18:00; in Estonia, Finland, Spain,
Sweden, and Denmark from 9:00 to 20:00; in France and Germany
from 8:00 to 18:00, in Hungary from 6:00 to 19:00, and in Italy
from 7:00 to 23:00.
