The presence of the Abdus Salam
International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Italy's
Friuli Venezia Giulia region (FVG) "can play an important role
in the current context in which the region is committed to
transforming itself from a border land to a land of connection,"
said Friuli Venezia Giulia Region President Massimiliano Fedriga
on the occasion of the Abdus Salam Centre for Theoretical
Physics' 60th anniversary.
"Thanks to its reputation and commitment to international
cooperation, the ICTP also plays a role in facilitating
dialogues and collaborations between scientists from around the
world," he remarked. The FVG, a "geographical border land," has
the possibility of using the presence of the ICTP as a bridge to
other regions and nations, facilitating the exchange of
knowledge, technologies, and resources. Cooperation with the
Western Balkans, in particular, presents opportunities for
promoting scientific and technological development in the region
and beyond," Fedriga stated.
In addition to the challenges of life sciences, quantum
technologies, and transition that the ICTP of Trieste addresses
and on which "the regional administration is focused," the FVG
region also "has adopted various measures to encourage the
process of decarbonisation of economic systems and energy in
terms of reducing emissions with an energy efficiency
improvement of the entire 'FVG Region System' and an increase in
energy production from renewable sources." The challenge is to
increase the use and adoption of hydrogen-based technologies,"
Fedriga told ANSA.
The focus is primarily on "green hydrogen derived from
renewable sources, used as a raw material, fuel, carrier, or
energy accumulator," as a lever for more sustainable development
with lower CO2 emissions and competitiveness. The Region also in
engaged in "strengthening the collaboration in the hydrogen
sector with Slovenia and Croatia by launching a unique process
at European level for the establishment of a North Adriatic
Hydrogen Valley - Fedriga recalled - an initiative that also
responds to the priorities of the 'Clean Hydrogen Partnership'
at European level, which has shown interest in the trilateral
cooperation platform launched as a pilot experience in the
Central Eastern European area."
