With a day of borderless events and initiatives spread across the territory between Slovenia and Italy, between Nova Gorica and Gorizia, the countdown to GO! 2025 European Capital of Culture officially kicks off on Thursday, February 8, 2025, on a significant anniversary for the two countries, because it crosses the National Day of Culture in Slovenia - the anniversary of the passing of the great poet France Prešeren - with the birth of Giuseppe Ungaretti (8.02.1888). "Nova Gorica and Gorizia are thus preparing to face together, for the next 365 days, the organization of the international events of the European Capital of Culture 2025," explains Romina Kocina, director of Gect GO, a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation whose mission is to "build" a cross-border city to attract in 2025 a wide audience, curious to experience an area straddling cultures, languages, and historical events. On Thursday, Feb. 8, a series of events designed in Slovenian, Italian or bilingual languages will take place in Nova Gorica and Gorizia, just as the daily exchanges of the inhabitants in the two "twin" cities take place.
It officially begins at 10 a.m. in the most iconic place of the two cities' 'sisterhood,' the Transalpina/Trg Evrope Square, on which both overlook, the meeting point between Italy and Slovenia, an exciting crossroads. Immediately afterwards, in Nova Gorica and Gorizia, guided tours aboard #borderless buses will kick off, offered in Slovenian and Italian. In Nova Gorica, initiatives for the day will coincide with the National Day of Culture.
