Watchword: Vespa. Dress code:
Bermuda shorts and T-shirts, the only alternative to cope with
the high temperatures that Trieste is experiencing this weekend.
The only recognizable soundtrack was the constant beeping of
scooter horns. The opportunity to ride the world-renowned
Italian scooter and invade the FVG regional county seat today
was offered by the 22nd International Gathering of the Vespa
club Trieste and Stray Cats, which celebrates its 75th
anniversary this year, being among the oldest Vespa clubs in
Italy.
Beginning yesterday in Trebiciano, on the Karst, including a
party area, concerts, and camping, today's gathering continued
with a parade, the Vespa Run, that led Vespa riders from the
heights over Trieste to the sea museum in the city's Old Port.
More than 400 Vespa fans, wearing helmets and mitts, then
took a scenic tourist route with a ride to the Victory
Lighthouse. Escorted by local police, scooters of all colors
with license plates from Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Austria,
Germany, Hungary, and the Czech Republic enlivened Trieste's
Saturday afternoon. Vespa riders of all ages participated in the
event, even with children in tow.
During the gathering, which runs until tomorrow, the club
also organizes guided tours of the city and the Karst region so
Vespisti can appreciate the beauty of the area. In addition, the
club has organized a new shuttle bus service to enable people to
reach Trebiciano from the city center.
