Members of the centre-left opposition on Saturday criticized Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini over huge train chaos at Milan's Central Station that affected rail connections across Italy.
"Delays and cancellations again today", said Elly Schlein, the leader of the largest member of the opposition, the Democratic Party (PD), in a statement.
Railway operator "Trenitalia is suggesting to avoid travel.
"And meanwhile the only journey Minister Salvini is interested in is his own to the interior ministry", said Schlein, referring to Salvini's alleged desire to return to the Viminale after his acquittal in December on charges of kidnapping migrants during his time as strongman anti-migrant interior minister in 2019.
The PD leader slammed Salvini as the "worst transport minister in history who is only concerned with moving from one position to the next while Italy is unable to travel, go work or study - a disaster", she said. Meanwhile, the leader of the opposition Five-Star movement (M5S) Giuseppe Conte who was the prime minister of the cabinet led by the M5S and League party when Salvini was interior minister in 2019, said Salvini was thinking about Elon Musk's satellites instead of being concerned about trains, referring to Salvini's endorsement of a potential deal with Musk to have his Starlink satellites take over Italian telecoms security.
"Today was another black day of train delays amid the most total indifference", noted Conte.
Green Europe co-spokesman and Green-Left Alliance (AVS) MP Angelo Bonelli said that, "with this government, cancellations and delays are a daily occurrence", urging Premier Giorgia Meloni to "seriously think about making Salvini step down, the worst transport minister of all time".
Salvini has taken a lot of flak over huge train chaos caused by technical issues in two Roman stations in October which followed a summer of delays and cancellations due to maintenance work.
